35 people die of enteric diseases

At least 35 people, including children and women, have died of diarrhoea and other enteric diseases in Tripura's Dhalai district during the past eight weeks.Health Minister Keshab Majumdar told newsmen that special medical teams, along with paramedical staff and medicines, were sent to the affected areas. The district administration had been asked to take precautionary measures to contain the diseases, he added.

Diarrhoea and other enteric diseases had broken out in the hilly and remote areas following scarcity of drinking water in these drought hit areas, the health minister pointed out.The Tripura Government had also taken special measures for health services in the Reang refugee camps in North Tripura. Over 40,000 tribal refugees in Mizoram had taken shelter in 11 relief camps since October 1977 following ethnic trouble in the Reang dominated areas of Mizoram.Recently over 4000 refugees had also taken shelter in these camps. The State Government had been facing serious problems to tackle the huge number of refugees, Mr. Majumdar observed.
