State-of-the-art airport in Mizoram The land locked State of Mizoram with its hilly and mountainous terrain has since long had an inadequate and unreliable surface communication system. The existing network of surface comminication facility was extensive and time consuming and the availability of a major domestic airport within the State was, of paramount importance and the choice for locating the major domestic airport was Lengupui which is at a distance of 40 kms from Aizawl. The airport is planned with modern facilities so as to promote economic growth by exploiting the vast tourism potential and export opportunities. With the provision of cargo facilities and export processing zones, the airport is likely to become the hub not only for Mizoram, but also for the entire North-Eastern region. With such state-of-the-art facilities, many flights are expected in not too distant future. The airport has the capability to expand for bigger aircrafts at a later date and with slight modification the terminal complex can handle international maintenance facilities (hangers/workshops, etc.), development of commercial areas like hotel, shopping plaza, full-fledged business centre with the possibility of including recreational centres. The support of the local people has been noteworthy. Private land holders in the vicinity of the site willingly donated their plots with compensation for the assets created within their land only. The construction of 8200 ft. long runway, link taxiway with the required markings are already completed. Apron for parking of four Boeing 737 aircrafts is also completed and ready for use. The works pertaining to the runway and its associated facilities for the airport which is the second largest in the North-East. |
