Manipuri Haj pilgrims return Out of the strong contingent of 62,000 Indian Haj pilgrims that came through various State Haj Committees, 182 were from Manipur this year. Out of which, 170 were on recommendation of the Manipur State Haj Committee. All the Indian pilgrims have returned home quite comfortably and without any sort of serious problem. The pilgrims were accommodated at fire-proof tent and nearby buildings. The Manipuri Haj pilgrims, majority of them elderly men and women, were provided suitable accommodation in three good buildings and they did not face any problem. Dr. Sayed Burhan-uddin, a Manipuri surgeon working in Mecca, who had been selected as chief medical co-ordinator of Indian Pilgrimage Welfare Forum, Mecca for 1999 Haj, extended his full co-operation and assistance to the Manipuri pilgrims most of whom could not speak any other language than their mother tounge, Manipuri. He also looked after their health and provided medicines. Some of the Manipuri pilgrims, who suffered from various chronic diseases like peptic ulcer, bronchitis, diabetes, were treated by Dr. Burhan-uddin and those who needed further investigations were treated in the hospital free of cost. Two elderly persons from Manipur were seriously ill due to respiratory failure and cholecystis during the Haj period and were treated by Dr. Burhan-uddin. With a view to ensure smooth and proper management and for welfare of the Manipuri Haj pilgrims, Dr. Buhar-uddin has made few suggestions to the Manipur Govt. NENA |
