Manipur minister escapes attempt on life

An abortive attempt was made on the life of Manipur Minister Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh when a grenade was hurled at his residence in Lamphel area in which his four-year-old son suffered minor injuries.

Official sources said here that some unidentified persons threw a grenade at Mr. Singh's official residence when the minister along with his family members was relaxing at the courtyard in the evening.

Mr. Singh escaped unhurt but his son suffered minor injuries. However, the boy was declared out of danger.Security guards posted at the minister's residence, opened fire following the explosion. CRPF personnel from the nearby CRPF camp also opened fire, sources said, adding that the assilants escaped under the cover of darkness.No arrest was made in this connection till the time of filing this report. Besides the motive behind the attack was also not known. Heavy police reinforcements led by Deputy Inspector General of Police N. Shyamanand Singh rushed to the spot and launched a combing operation in the area.

A senior police official said that some underground activists had earlier demanded a huge sum from the minister, who refused to pay any money to the ultras. However, it was not known whether the attack was connected with the extortion demands.
