AAPSU postpones agitations till Dec. 12

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) has decided to postpone its proposed third and fourth phases of agitational programmes till December 12 next. AAPSU president Nabam Jollaw said that they had decided to postpone their proposed bandh after a meeting with Chief Minister Mukut Mithi.

Mr. Mithi had asked for more time, at least till January next, to work on their charter of demands, Jollaw said, adding that AAPSU had, however, decided to allow only two months’ time for the same. As per earlier programme, AAPSU was supposed to observe a 24-hour statewide bandh from October 18 and a 36-hour Arunachal Pradesh bandh from October 23 next, to press for their 16-point charter of demands. They had already observed a peace rally on October 3 last and had called off their second phase of six-hour dharna on October 11, after a seven-hour discussion with the State Government of the issue. Jollaw said that the Chief Minister had assured to look into their demand of allocation of Rs 100 crore additional fund for the infrastructure development of the Education department. Meanwhile, an additional fund of Rs 50 lakh had already been allotted to the Arunachal University, Jollaw said, quoting the Chief Minister.

On the demands of 100 per cent reservation of group ‘A’ post for Scheduled Tribe candidates, the Chief Minister has assured to discuss the issue in the Cabinet for a favourable solution, he said. On cancellation of Scheduled Tribes status given to ‘Yabin’ population which migrated from Myanmar and sending back of Tibetan refugees to their camps, including cancellation of ST certificates issued to some of the refugees, the Chief Minister has sought some more time as the issue was a delicate one, he said. Meanwhile, the AAPSU has constituted two fact-finding committees on refugees, one each for eastern and western zones, to be headed by its general secretary Goge Sora and president Jollaw, respectively. The committee would work out the modalities and collect the relevant documents about the refugees and submit its findings to both the State and Central governments within a month for necessary action, Jollaw said.
