Assam

Assam is the frontier province of India on the north-east. It is surrounded by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh on the north, Nagaland and Manipur on the east, Meghalaya and Mizoram on the south and Bangladesh, Tripura and West Bengal on the west. A narrow strip of sub - mountainous region of the Himalayas connects Assam to the Indian mainland.

assam1.jpg (23808 bytes) The state is dominated by the river Brahamputra, whose lush 700 kilometre valley is sandwiched between the Himalyan foothills to the north, and the hills and plateau of Meghalaya to the south.

Assam has a rich legacy of culture and civilization behind her. It is home to different races of men - Austric, Mongolian, Dravidian, and Aryan. The small and serene villages are inhabited by people as warm, colourful and fascinating as the land itself.

Majuli, the world’s largest river island, located in Assam has a 15th Century Monastery that houses medieval manuscripts, musical instruments and miniature paintings. Other tourist attractions include the State Museum, which has a fine collection of tribal artefacts and handwoven silks, Kamakhya temple, Umananda, Kaziranga Game sanctuary ( Home of endangered Indian one-horned Rhino), Manas Sanctuary and Saraighat bridge.
